Sub-Zero Error Codes, Alerts & Indicator Lights

What every Sub-Zero alert means, what you can safely do and when you need a technician.

Quick answer

Sub-Zero refrigerators don't show long lists of numeric error codes to owners. They use alerts: a service indicator, high temperature and door ajar alarms, a flashing temperature display after power loss, and maintenance indicators for filters and ice maker cleaning. Detailed fault codes are stored in the control and read by a technician in diagnostic mode.

How Sub-Zero Alerts Differ by Series

  • Classic Series (BI / CL): digital control with temperature displays, alarms, Max Ice, Sabbath and service indicators; fault history in diagnostic mode.
  • Designer / Integrated (IT / IC / ID / IW / DE): touch controls with icons and alerts; some models connect to an app.
  • PRO Series: separate controls for dual refrigeration; alarms can be compartment-specific.
  • Legacy 500 / 600 series: mechanical or simple electronic controls with no fault codes. See 500 series and 600 series.
  • Ice makers and wine storage: compact controls with clean, temperature and service indicators.

Safe Reset Procedure

  1. Turn the unit off at the control (if equipped).
  2. Switch off the breaker for the appliance.
  3. Wait 5 minutes.
  4. Restore power and turn the unit on.
  5. Allow up to 24 hours for temperatures to stabilize.

If an alert returns after a reset, or you hear repeated clicking from the compressor area, stop resetting and call (725) 237-7399.
