The sealed system is the closed refrigerant loop in a Sub-Zero: compressor, condenser, filter-drier, capillary tube and evaporator(s). When it fails, the unit runs but can't cool. We repair it in-house: compressor replacement, evaporator and condenser replacement, leak repair, filter-drier replacement, evacuation and an accurately weighed refrigerant charge. Federal law requires this work to be done by EPA Section 608 certified technicians, and ours are certified.
What Is a Sub-Zero Sealed System?
Every Sub-Zero refrigerator, freezer, wine unit and ice maker cools with a hermetically sealed refrigerant circuit:
- Compressor: pumps refrigerant vapor and raises its pressure and temperature. Newer Sub-Zero units use variable-speed compressors driven by an inverter board. See compressor replacement.
- Condenser: releases heat to the room. On full-size built-ins it sits in the top mechanical compartment. On undercounter units it's behind the toe-kick. See condenser replacement.
- Filter-drier: traps moisture and debris. It's always replaced when the system is opened.
- Capillary tube: a precisely sized metering tube that drops refrigerant pressure before the evaporator. See restriction repair.
- Evaporator(s): absorb heat from the cabinet. Dual-refrigeration models have separate fresh food and freezer evaporators. See evaporator replacement.
- Valves (some models): direct refrigerant between evaporators on single-compressor, dual-evaporator systems.
Signs of a Sealed System Problem
- The unit runs constantly but both sections slowly warm.
- Only part of the evaporator frosts (partial frost pattern) after the defrost system checks out.
- The compressor clicks on and off without starting, or hums and trips. See compressor clicking.
- Oily residue on tubing in the mechanical compartment, a common sign of a leak.
- The condenser and fan run, but the condenser coil stays cool (no heat being moved).
Many of these symptoms can also come from airflow, defrost or electronic failures. We rule those out before condemning the sealed system. Replacing a compressor that isn't bad is the most expensive mistake in refrigeration repair.

How We Perform Sealed System Work
- Confirm the diagnosis: electrical tests, temperatures, amperage, frost pattern, and gauges only when justified (every access point is a potential leak point).
- Recover refrigerant with certified recovery equipment, as required by EPA Section 608.
- Replace the failed component with brazed joints under a nitrogen purge to prevent internal scale.
- Replace the filter-drier every time the system is opened.
- Pressure test with dry nitrogen to verify every joint.
- Deep vacuum to remove air and moisture, verified with a micron gauge.
- Weigh in the exact refrigerant charge from the unit's rating plate. Sub-Zero systems hold small, critical charges, so "topping off" by pressure doesn't work.
- Run test: temperatures, amperage and cycling verified before we leave.
Is Sealed System Repair Worth It on a Sub-Zero?
Usually, yes. A Sub-Zero is built into custom cabinetry. Replacing it means a new unit plus panels, possible cabinet changes and installation. A sealed system repair restores the original unit for a fraction of that. We'll give you an honest recommendation based on the unit's age and overall condition. Read repair or replace.
Typical Cost

| Capillary tube / filter-drier restriction repair | $1,195 – $2,250 |
| Condenser coil replacement | $1,395 – $2,450 |
| Evaporator replacement | $1,595 – $2,850 |
| Compressor replacement (incl. filter-drier, vacuum & charge) | $1,895 – $3,450 |

Older Sub-Zero? A new full-size built-in typically runs $12,000–$20,000+ before custom panels and installation. Even a full compressor replacement ($1,895–$3,450) keeps your original unit, panels and cabinetry. See why repair wins.
