Sub-Zero electronic controls store fault codes that are read in a technician diagnostic (service) mode. The codes identify categories such as thermistor faults, fan faults, defrost faults, compressor or inverter faults, valve or damper faults and communication faults. The entry procedure and code meanings vary by series, so technicians use model-specific service data to interpret them.
What It Means
Unlike brands that show numeric error codes on the front display, Sub-Zero generally shows the homeowner an alert (such as the service light) and keeps detailed fault codes for service. In diagnostic mode, a technician can:
- View stored fault history
- Read live sensor temperatures
- Manually run components (compressor, fans, defrost, valves) to test them
- Check software and configuration
Common fault categories
| Fault category | Component | Typical symptom |
|---|---|---|
| Thermistor / sensor | Thermistor | Wrong temperatures, defrost issues |
| Evaporator fan | Evaporator fan motor | One compartment warm |
| Condenser fan | Condenser fan motor | Overheating, poor cooling |
| Defrost | Defrost system | Frost, blocked airflow |
| Compressor / inverter | Inverter board, compressor | No cooling, clicking |
| Valve / damper | Refrigerant valve or damper | One section not cooling |
| Communication | Control boards | Erratic display, no response |
| Ice maker | Ice maker assembly | No ice |
Common Causes
- The control detected an out-of-range reading
- A component failed to respond to a command
What You Can Do
- Note any indicators and temperatures.
- Call us with your model number. We'll read the fault history on site.
What a Technician Does
We use diagnostic mode to read fault history and run components individually, which lets us confirm the failure before replacing parts.
