Two Very Different Ice Makers
In-freezer automatic ice makers
Found in built-ins and freezer columns. Water enters through a solenoid valve and a heated fill tube into a mold, freezes, and gets ejected into the bin. Failures: water valve, frozen fill tube, ice maker module, bin sensor arm, freezer temperature. See ice maker assembly.
Standalone clear-ice makers (UC-15I series)
These make clear ice by circulating water over a chilled evaporator plate, so minerals stay in the water instead of the ice. A harvest cycle releases the sheet, which is cut into cubes. Failures: mineral scale on the evaporator and water system, water pump, water inlet valve, drain pump (IP models), thermistors and controls, plus a dirty condenser behind the toe-kick. Las Vegas Water and Your Ice Maker
Las Vegas tap water comes largely from Lake Mead and is notably hard. Scale builds on clear-ice evaporators, water distributors, pumps and valves. Typical results: thin or hollow cubes, slow production, and eventually no ice at all. Regular cleaning and descaling, plus a good filter, prevent most of these calls.
