Sub-Zero freezers usually stop freezing because of an iced evaporator from a defrost failure, a failed freezer fan, a door or gasket leak, a dirty condenser, or a sealed system problem. We repair freezer columns, freezer drawers and the freezer sections of built-in refrigerators across Las Vegas, Henderson and Boulder City.

Sub-Zero Freezer Problems and Causes
| Problem | Common causes |
|---|---|
| Not freezing / soft food | Iced evaporator (defrost failure), freezer fan motor, gasket leak, condenser airflow, low refrigerant |
| Frost on the back wall or food | Defrost heater, defrost sensor, door not sealing, door left ajar |
| Ice on the floor of the freezer | Frozen defrost drain, drain heater failure |
| No ice production | Water supply, filter, fill tube, water valve, ice maker module, warm freezer |
| Too cold / overfreezing | Thermistor, control, Max Ice left on |
| High-temp alarm | Door ajar, defrost or fan failure, sealed system |
Why Freezers Ice Up
Every frost-free Sub-Zero freezer periodically warms its evaporator with a defrost heater to melt frost. The meltwater drains to a pan in the mechanical compartment, where it evaporates. If the heater, the defrost sensor or the control fails, frost keeps building until it blocks airflow. The freezer then warms, and the evaporator fan may start scraping against ice. A manual defrost temporarily restores cooling, but the failed part has to be replaced or the problem returns within days. Learn more about the defrost system.
Protecting Your Food
Keep the freezer closed. A full freezer holds temperature for many hours. If it rises above 0°F and keeps climbing, move valuables to a cooler with ice. See our food safety guide.
