The Sub-Zero service light (service indicator) means the control has detected a component fault and saved a fault code. Common causes are a thermistor fault, an evaporator or condenser fan failure, a defrost problem, a compressor or inverter fault, or a communication error between boards. A technician reads the stored code in diagnostic mode to identify the failed part.
What It Means
Sub-Zero electronic controls monitor sensors, fans, defrost and the compressor. When a reading falls outside its expected range, the control turns on the Service indicator and stores a fault code. The code itself usually isn't shown to the homeowner. It's read in the technician diagnostic mode.
The unit may keep cooling normally, cool partially, or not cool at all, depending on which component failed.
Common Causes
- Thermistor (temperature sensor) open or shorted. See thermistors
- Evaporator fan or condenser fan not running
- Defrost took too long or failed
- Compressor or inverter board fault
- Refrigerant valve or damper not responding
- Communication fault between the main board and the user interface
- Ice maker fill or harvest fault
What You Can Do
- Note which compartment is affected and what the temperature displays show.
- Check that doors are closed and the condenser is clean.
- A single power cycle (breaker off 5 minutes) may clear a one-time glitch.
- If the service light returns, schedule service. Don't keep resetting.
What a Technician Does
We read the stored fault history, test the indicated component and its wiring, and repair the root cause. Many faults point to parts we stock, such as thermistors, fans and defrost components.
