Las Vegas water is hard, meaning high in dissolved minerals. In Sub-Zero ice makers, especially UC-15I clear-ice makers, minerals form scale on the evaporator, water distributor, pump and valves, causing thin or cloudy ice, slow production, leaks and eventually no ice. Regular cleaning and descaling, timely filter changes and proper water treatment prevent most of these problems.
Where Scale Builds Up
- Evaporator plate (clear-ice makers)
- Water distributor tube
- Water pump
- Water inlet valve screens
- Dispenser lines and nozzles
Symptoms
- Thin, small or cloudy ice
- Slow production
- Clean light coming on frequently
- Water leaks
- No ice
Prevention
- Follow the clean indicator and descale regularly with an approved ice machine cleaner.
- Replace water filters on schedule.
- Consider whole-home or point-of-use water treatment.
- Clean the condenser behind the toe-kick.
