Sub-Zero Freezer Not Freezing

Soft ice cream and frost.

Updated October 2026 · By the Sub-Zero Repair Las Vegas service team

Quick answer

A Sub-Zero freezer that isn't freezing usually has an iced evaporator from a defrost failure, a failed freezer evaporator fan, a door or gasket leak, a dirty condenser or failed condenser fan, or a sealed system problem.

Soft ice cream is usually the first sign. Act quickly: a freezer can lose temperature faster than you'd expect once airflow stops.

Check These First (5 Minutes, No Tools)

  1. Check the set point (0°F is typical) and that Max Ice isn't the only thing running.
  2. Close the door on a dollar bill: it should drag when pulled out. Check around the whole gasket.
  3. Look for frost on the back wall or on food packages.
  4. Make sure the freezer isn't overpacked against the vents.
  5. Clean the condenser.

How We Fix It

We check evaporator frost, test the fan, defrost heater and sensor, inspect the gasket and door alignment, and verify condenser airflow and compressor performance.
