The evaporator fan circulates cold air from the evaporator into the compartment. When it fails, the evaporator stays cold but the compartment warms. A worn fan also squeals, grinds or ticks. Sub-Zero dual-refrigeration models have separate fans for fresh food and freezer sections.
What It Does
Behind the rear panel of each compartment, a small fan pulls air across the evaporator coil and pushes it through vents into the cabinet. On dual-refrigeration models, each section has its own fan.
Symptoms of Failure
- One compartment warm while the other is fine
- Squealing or grinding inside the cabinet
- Ticking or scraping (fan hitting ice)
- Weak airflow from vents
Why It Fails
- Bearing wear from long run times
- Ice buildup from a defrost failure stopping the blade
- Electrical failure
Diagnosis & Replacement
We confirm voltage reaches the fan and test the motor. If ice stopped the fan, we also fix the defrost problem that caused it. Otherwise the new fan fails too.
