Sub-Zero Refrigerant Leak Repair

Find the leak, fix the leak, then charge it right. Never just a top-off.

Quick answer

A Sub-Zero that slowly loses cooling while running constantly often has a refrigerant leak. We locate leaks with electronic detectors, bubble solution and nitrogen pressure testing, repair or replace the leaking component, replace the filter-drier, evacuate the system and weigh in the exact factory charge.

Why "Just Adding Freon" Doesn't Work

Refrigerant isn't consumed. If the charge is low, it leaked out. Sub-Zero systems use a small, precisely measured charge, so adding refrigerant without fixing the leak gives you a few weeks of cooling before the problem returns. Overcharging or undercharging also stresses the compressor. The correct repair is leak search, repair, new filter-drier, evacuation and a weighed charge.

Where Sub-Zero Leaks Happen

  • Evaporator punctures from chipping ice
  • Corroded evaporator or condenser tubing
  • Brazed joints that crack from vibration
  • Service access points added during a previous repair
  • Rubbed tubing in the mechanical compartment

Our Leak Detection Methods

  1. Visual inspection for oil residue at joints and tubing.
  2. Electronic leak detector sweep of accessible tubing and components.
  3. Bubble solution on suspect joints.
  4. Nitrogen pressure test: pressurize the system and monitor for pressure drop.
  5. Isolation of sections when needed to pinpoint a leak inside foam-insulated areas.

Leaks Inside the Foam

Some tubing runs inside the cabinet's foam insulation. When a leak is in an inaccessible section, the reliable repair is often to bypass that section with new tubing routed outside the foam. We'll explain the options before starting.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you just recharge my Sub-Zero?

We don't recharge without fixing the leak. Otherwise it leaks out again and you pay twice. We find and repair the leak first, then charge the system correctly.

What refrigerant does my Sub-Zero use?

It depends on the model and age: very old units used R-12, many units use R-134a, and some newer models use R-600a (isobutane). The rating plate lists the refrigerant and charge. See refrigerants explained.
