Sub-Zero Evaporator Replacement

Leaking or corroded evaporators in fresh food, freezer and wine compartments.

Quick answer

The evaporator is the coil inside the cabinet, behind the rear panel, that absorbs heat. Sub-Zero evaporators can develop refrigerant leaks from corrosion or physical damage, often caused by chipping ice with a sharp object. A leaking evaporator is replaced, followed by a new filter-drier, pressure test, evacuation and weighed refrigerant charge.

How Evaporators Fail

  • Punctures from sharp tools used to chip away ice during a manual defrost. This is the #1 avoidable sealed system failure.
  • Corrosion over many years, especially where meltwater sits on aluminum tubing.
  • Vibration fatigue at tubing joints.

Never use a knife, ice pick or screwdriver to remove ice from a Sub-Zero. Unplug the unit and let ice melt naturally, or call us. One slip can turn a simple defrost repair into an evaporator replacement.

Symptoms of a Leaking Evaporator

  • Gradual loss of cooling over days or weeks
  • Partial frost pattern: only the first part of the coil frosts
  • Unit runs constantly
  • Sometimes an oily residue near a joint or puncture

Dual Evaporator Systems

Most full-size Sub-Zero units have separate fresh food and freezer evaporators. A leak in one still drains the entire system charge, so both sections eventually warm. We locate the leak precisely before replacing anything. See leak repair.

Replacement Process

  1. Leak search confirms the evaporator is the source.
  2. Recover refrigerant.
  3. Remove interior panels and the old evaporator.
  4. Install the new evaporator, braze connections under nitrogen.
  5. Replace the filter-drier, pressure test, evacuate, weigh in the charge.
  6. Reinstall panels, insulation and the defrost heater; run test.
