The Sub-Zero control board (main board) reads the temperature sensors and runs the compressor, fans, defrost heater, valves and ice maker. The user interface board handles the display and buttons. Board failures cause dead or erratic displays, components that won't run and communication faults. We test inputs and outputs before replacing a board.
What It Does
Electronic Sub-Zero models use a main control board plus a user interface (UI) board. The main board makes the decisions based on thermistor readings and drives the relays and outputs. On variable-speed models it also communicates with the inverter board.
Symptoms of Failure
- Blank, frozen or flickering display
- Buttons don't respond
- A component (fan, heater, compressor) never turns on
- Service indicator with a communication fault
- Erratic temperatures with good sensors
Why It Fails
- Power surges, especially during summer storms
- Heat in the mechanical compartment
- Moisture or corrosion on connectors
- Age
Diagnosis & Replacement
A board is the most commonly misdiagnosed Sub-Zero part. We verify sensor inputs, check wiring and connectors, and test outputs with the board powered before replacing it. A loose connector or failed sensor can look exactly like a bad board.
